went to see the vagina monologues at the empire last night. it was absolutley amazing. i'd heard of it and read the book years ago but i'd been looking forward to seeing it for ages and ages. there were 3 women doing it - jean boht (the mum in bread), anita dobson (angie from eastenders) and ester mcvey (some presenter woman who was having her theatrical debut). They were all realy really good, the monolgues were well split between them to suit they own style of reading. at some points in the show i wanted to laugh so much it hurt and at other points i felt like crying cos some of the monolgues are so sad and heartfelt.

“I decided to talk to women about their vaginas, to do vagina interviews, which became vagina monologues. I talked with over two hundred women. I talked to older women, young women, married women, single women, lesbians, college professors, actors, corporate professionals, sex workers, African American women, Hispanic women, Asian American women, Native American women, Caucasian women, Jewish women. At first women, were reluctant to talk. They were a little shy. But once they got going, you couldn’t stop them.”
- Eve Ensler

one of the funniest bits was the "clit fact" which anita dobson told us we were able to shout out at any point in the performance and have recited to us:
the clitoris is pure in purpose, it is the only organ made purely for pleasure
there are 8000 nerve endings in the clitoris, which is more than anywhere else on the male or female body
this include the fingers, lips and tongue
this is also twice the number of nerve endings in the end of the penis!!!!

the vagina monologues is not some crappy feminist mumbo jumbo, its a literary masterpiece which both women and men should read or go and see performed.
