DeQuervain's syndrome (also known as washerwoman's sprain, Radial styloid tenosynovitis or De Quervain's disease), named for Swiss surgeon Fritz de Quervain who first identified it in 1885, is an inflammation of the sheath or tunnel that surrounds two tendons that control movement of the thumb. It is caused by the repetitive motion of the thumb constantly being required to move up and down (usually associated with using a computer keyboard or typewriter). It can be included in a loose group of conditions called repetitive strain injuries.
Symptoms are pain and swelling over the thumb side of the wrist, possibly numbness on the back of the thumb, and difficulty gripping. Finkelstein's test is used to diagnose DeQuervain's syndrome in people who have wrist pain. To perform the test, the thumb is placed in the closed fist and the hand is tilted towards the little finger, as shown in the image. If pain occurs at the wrist below the thumb, DeQuervain's tenosynovitis is likely. DeQuervain's disease is self-limited and resolves spontaneously in most cases by a year. Splints may be worn to help prevent the pain associated with the inflammation but they do not change the course of the illness.

went to my mum and dads on friday night after work as my sister and her husband were visiting. we exchanged xmas presents as theyre away in egypt for xmas. they got me an I-dog and some other bits and pieces.
after i got home i got showered and changed and went to meet nick and joey and their friends with skip, al and tom in the pilgrim as it was joeys 21st birthday. we were also later joined by mr lee. we had a great night, loads of old tunes were on and loads of people i havent seen in years were out too!!
on saturday morning i had broadband installed, which is a truly beautiful and wonderful thing. been downloading loads of music, just cos i can :o) then later on saturday i popped in to skips to feed little izzy and do my washing whilst watching the x-factor. i still cant believe brenda got voted out, it has to be a fix!!!
on sunday afternoon me and lee went to see Factotum, a film based on a book by Charles Bukowski, at fact. It was an excellent film. totally true to the book and in no way a sell out. we both really enjoyed it. after the film we also had a beer in the swan, which is always good :o)
