went to a brilliant gig last night at the lomax. havent been to its latest home before, but i quite like the new lomax as a venue. its a decent size with a big stage and a big bar. the drinks arent particularly cheap (£2.50 a bottle) but its not too scandalous, and they provide jugs of iced water for everyone to help themselves too, which is more than most gig venues do!
first up were Voodoo Glow Skulls. They are best described as a heavy ska band i guess. they played a very instense and energetic performance and everyone seemed very very impressed!! They had some loony dressed up in a mad costume on stage sometimes. It had a huge green head with spikey hair and big boggly eyes. If you look on their webpage, and go to the merchandise page, you'll get the idea.
Next on were Goldfinger, who were my reason for going to this gig. If you dont know who they are, but you've ever played Tony Hawk on the playstation, then you'll recognise their stuff. They do a song called superman -
here i am doing everything i can
holding on to what i am
pretending i'm a superman etc etc
anyways, i'd wanted to see them for ages and ages and i wasnt disappointed. Not only was their music amazing played live, but they did a good stage show too. They got up to all kinds including chatting about man breasts, the fact that the lead singer reckoned he'd be able to give a man with a small willy a good blow job as he'd lost a tooth and his gum was soft, general taking the piss out of people, getting a kid to come up on stage and eat a chocolate bar out of the drummers arse (no really, and he did do it) and all sorts.
They are soooo damn good live and they played mine and joolias fave song, their cover of 99 red balloons, which made the place go absolutley wild at the end! for their finale, after they finished 99 red balloons and they'd marched off stage whilst playing (believe me, it looked kewl) all the cymbals on the drum kit were set on fire, with some kind of fuel in them or something, whilst the drummer continued to play for a few minutes, which just looked soooooooooo kewl!!!
I was really really impressed with goldfinger. i'd heard their older stuff, which i really like, but i didnt like their latest single and i was worried that they were totally changing their style to a very mainstream, copycat kind of style, and i was also worried that their playing would reflect this, but it didnt at all! They had shit loads of energy on stage and everyone else seemed impressed too. I'd definitley go and see them again.
"A" were headlining last night. I've seen A a few times before now. I've seen them in the K2 (the old one) and the Picket abou 5-6 years ago, and i used to think they were pretty damn good. Then they seemed do disappear for a while, but when they came back they had changed so much and their style was nothing like they used to be. Their stuff is ok, but thats all it is. Its nothing special as far as i'm concerned, it just doesnt interest me. Everyone else i was with (rob, joolia, tony, wally) seemed to think the same, as we went home after about 3 songs of their set. I know they're really popular, and i can see why other people like them, but i just dont like them anymore. Thats my opinion, take it or leave it!
Still cant wait to see The Vandals on saturday at Liverpool Uni. The uni has renamed their venues, fuck knows why. The Stanley Theatre is now known as The Academy 2, and Mountford Hall is now The Academy. Dont know why they bother!!! But anyways, i cant wait till the gig on saturday, its gonna be soooo good. Last time i saw them was in 1997 when they were supporting No Doubt, and they played an amazing set!!!
GIGTASTIC!!!!
going to robs tonight, which is nice. everything is going ok there, we're just taking it one day at a time and seeing where we end up. :o)
