did anyone else think bob hope was already dead????

The family of Bob Hope say the legendary entertainer died with a smile on his face and a trademark wisecrack right at the end.

As tributes poured in from around the world, his daughter Linda said that when asked shortly before his death where he wanted to be buried, he quipped: "Surprise me."

Hope died of pneumonia last night at his home in Toluca Lake, California, two months after celebrating his 100th birthday.

Linda said: "Dad had an amazing send off. All the family were together with him. I don't think he could have asked for a more peaceful, beautiful death. I think all the good vibes that he put out during his lifetime came back."

A priest said a mass for the comic and several nurses who had treated him were also at his bedside. "The fact that there was a little bit of an audience around warmed dad's heart," she said.

She added that the family were prepared for the end, but it would still take time to accept his death. "We've had him with us for a long time and it takes a little while to let him go."

Hope received more than 2,000 awards in his career, including an honorary knighthood from the Queen in 1998. He was a star of stage and screen, but perhaps best known for taking his show around the world to boost the morale of US servicemen stationed overseas.

George W Bush led the tributes, describing him as a "great citizen". "Bob Hope made us laugh," said the president, "He lifted our spirits. Bob Hope served our nation. We will mourn the loss of a good man."

Hope entertained US troops during the Second World War, the Korean and Vietnam conflicts and the 1991 Gulf war.

A Buckingham Palace spokeswoman said the Queen was sending a private message to his widow. Chat show host Michael Parkinson remembered Hope as "one of the greatest entertainers of the 20th century".
