ooh almost forgot to mention, last thursday i went to a poetry night at FACT. it was the launch of the new edition of a poetry anthology called In The Red which has north west poets work published in it.
Lee (snarlie) is a poet and had one of his best poems published in the anthology but i wont quote that, as i'll leave that to him, but it is wonderful. His friend Kirsti from Uni had a poem read out by a friend of hers, Matt i think his name is, who read it out in drag. He wore a long black quite tasteful dress and a blonde curly permed wig. This will seem more relevant when you hear the poem, its very cool indeed:
Smear - Kirsti Halls
Stripped
from the waist down
no surgical gown
to cover a running tremor
of hot and cold embarrassment
and yet still faced with the dilema
socks on, or off?
"Say when" she coughs from behind
the curtain, and I'm still not certain
so the socks stay on.
"When"
"Jump on the bed then!"
The nurse enters, stage right,
wearing a slight pantomime grin,
I lie back on the thin, virginal-white
paper sheets and try to think about
what i'm going to cook for tea that night.
"Knees up, please"
Chips, quiche, something nice.
"Thats it, relax"
Lasagne, pizza, Jesus Christ!
It burns with an electric shock
of cold metal bursting on sensitve skin
she could have fucking warmed it up first!
I suck in, ball my fists, feel fingers
slippery slide inside on damp palms -
I try to stay calm.
Like an archaeologist
she starts blindly scraping
in the dark for clues.
She tries to crack a joke!
I'm not amused.
I laugh
I think its such an amazing poem, she puts it so well and so accurately. any woman who's ever had a smear test will understand!
There was a guy there who also read out a few good poems, he was different from the other men reading out their work, he was natural, so silly accent or unnecessary dramatic pauses or slurred phrasing, just honest natural writing:
Wicklow - Gary Smillie
Teasing, testing
At the finger tip
I tore a good clean scarlet strip,
Pressed it hard until it dripped.
And it felt good, I will not deny it.
I enjoy the minitature blood letting.
I enjoy it best with sympathy and pity
From some passing girl, petite and pretty
Who, impressed, can't help from commenting:
"That must have hurt?"
And I'll say
"Oh it's nothing."
Still picking and prising
To prevent it scabbing
there were loads of other good poems but i dont have space to copy them all out :o)
had an ok day in work today after my day off. i'm doing 2 hours overtime every night this week in an attempt to get some extra cash. it seems to fly by so i dont mind it too much at all, and its time and a half for overtime hours so the 8 hours i'll have done this week will be an extra 12 hours in my wage packet before the bastard taxman takes most of it away!!
going to lexys tomorrow, which will be lovely as per usual, even if i am going to be forced to watch Charmed....ah well, its worth it :o)
Then at the weekend i'm having a mini drinking session in mine to de-stress joolia after her exams, well done hunny for getting through them :o)
and dont forget, its snarlies birthday a week on saturday (22nd)!!
